I pace the long hallways of the Killswitch, coming out of the nest of cramped rooms that cluster around the command center and the big central room used as a bar. It’s so crowded in there it’s almost like a hive.

Past the central room the hallways widen. I can still see the elegant scrollwork around the ceiling of the bar from when it was a ballroom. This ship would have been a travel vessel, intended for long exploration. The Ishana like to be well looked after if they are going to be off planet for a long time and that means a ballroom is a must.

Not far from the central room I come up under the magnificent observation deck on top of the ship. A massive translucent bubble that can be reached from within by multiple elevators or staircases and five separate docking areas up top. The stars spin above me and I pause there for awhile. Signs of the Ishana are everywhere in this ship.

I feel an urge to explore the rest of her, but I know that even if I start jogging now, I won’t make it back to command by late tomorrow. The Killswitch is just that big. The rest of her houses mechanic rooms and hanger decks, shuttle storage and landing runs, cargo bays, training rooms and more private rooms. It’s a world unto itself.

I turn back into the twisting warren of halls in the main area. I’m just trying to distract myself, really. All I want t to do is go to Ameld. I feel like I know her intimately, as if we have years of familiarity built between us. This is a dangerous feeling to have. No matter how connected we are, if I move too quickly, I could screw everything up.

As my feet lightly pad the metal walkways, I coach myself. She is young, a literal child compared to me. She is inexperienced in the ways of the world. She is confused and grieving. No matter how capable she seems, I must learn to look at her with sympathy and care.

I knock lightly on the door, even though it’s my room. I want her to feel that I am respecting her space. I’ve never lived closely with anyone before, so I’m sure I’ll make mistakes. I dread them, knowing that it could break my bond with her forever.

She calls for me to come in. I can’t help thinking about what I would do if she decided to leave and refused to help us. What would I do? Could I live with myself if I collared her and put her in a cage?

Would it even be possible to do such a thing? It is more likely she would tear the ship apart in fury.

She looks up at me eagerly as I move towards her and this brings a smile to my face. I sit down on the bed, near to her but not in her space. I put my hands in my lap and will them to stay there.
